Finally!!!
You know when you are in the literary minority, because you would rather be dipped in honey and expose yourself to a colony of red ants, than read another book by an author whose stories are histrionically depressing (and really, its the histrionic part you object to)
but
who gets touted every-where! - on the blogs, with acquaintances, at work - and you just can't figure out why he is being touted and wonder if perhaps you are really are all alone in this world....and then, suddenly you walk by a blog that you think is superlative and find this -
your heart does a little touting jump of joy of its own because somewhere out there, is somebody who doesn't think melodramatic stories that come out of rape, hardship, war, torture and ta-dang another rape is brilliant!

Well actually I thought 'Kite Runner' became too Bollywoodish after a bit and I liked '1000 Suns' better cos atleast the women protagonists were more feisty. But I agree with you that I more enjoy stories that celebrate the best in human nature than it's lowest points, which is probably the reason that I now prefer reading 1) children's books or 2) classics!
omg - me too!!!
My sis & I spent the vacation rereading the LOTR & the Chronicles.
I like what you say - the best in human nature...or even something more humorous.
hear hear- I want to read a South Asian novel about dashing adventure through the streets of Bombay or something.
THAT would be a good read!
