Why didn't his family ever follow up on where he was? Did they ever look up their rights? Use any connections? I think it sounds suspicious. She was probably trying to get rid of him in the first place. Just watch, she'll poison his food in a couple days..oops, oh well. He was probably safer in jail.

uhm...you never know. But really how is it possible to be lost in the system for 38 years?
Maybe he bribed the guards not to tell his family where he was...
